I’ve been on hiatus for a couple of months, partly because of being busy in real life, and partly because of difficulties in research.
However, I’ve finally managed to get a hold of some information on a Dr. James Miranda Barry that I’ve been after, and will hopefully have an article on this individual next Sunday (November 25th)
Thank you to everyone who’s been patient with this site.
Hi There,
Just Googled “Alexander Wood” and found your web site.
We are in the process of writing a “Rainbow Minute” about his life. Great site!
“The Rainbow Minute” airs on our local community radio station – WRIR – “Radio for the Rest of Us” – 97.3fm in Richmond, VA. It is sometimes included as part of “This Way Out” from Los Angeles.
I see you are working on Dr. James Barry. We completed an episode on Dr. Barry. Here is the text for that “Rainbow Minute.”
Enjoy!
Cheers,
Judd
“Dr. James Barry – The Distinguished Yet Secretive Surgeon,” coming up now on “The Rainbow Minute.”
Dr. James Barry was born around 1795. In 1812, he received a medical doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. Soon after, he joined the British Army, ending up in South Africa. There, he became a talented surgeon and performed the first successful Cesarean section using modern Western techniques. With his attention to improving local health conditions, he was promoted to medical inspector for the colony.
In 1864, Barry retired and returned to England, accompanied by his Jamaican manservant and poodle named Psyche. A year later, Barry died.
When the woman preparing Barry’s body for burial took off his clothes, she discovered he was a woman, unmasking the first woman to earn a medical degree and join the British army in the United Kingdom.
“The Rainbow Minute” is produced by Judd Proctor and Brian Burns and recorded in the studios at WRIR in Richmond, Virginia and read by volunteers like me, Alyssa Solomon.
